Published Jan 16, 2019Continuing its series of anniversary celebrations, storied label Mute has announced a box set collecting interpretations of John Cage's composition "4'33"" — yes, the famously silent one — from artists past and present.
Dubbed STUMM433, the box set is set to arrive in May of this year and features more than 50 Mute artists, including New Order, Depeche Mode, Moby, Liars, Yann Tiersen, Goldfrapp, the Afghan Whigs, Cold Specks, Erasure, Lee Ranaldo and more.
For those unfamiliar, Cage composed "4'33"" in 1952 for any instrument or combination of instruments. Its notoriety comes from the score's instruction to the performer/performers to not play their instrument for the duration of the piece.
Each artist has also created a visual to accompany their performance of the piece. Alongside the announcement, the label has shared a visual for Laibach's interpretation. The short film, starring Croatian performance artist Vlasta Delimar, references the photograph "Duchamp Playing Chess With a Nude (Eve Babitz)" and can be viewed below.
