Published Feb 21, 2020After a two-decade absence, Ottawa shoegaze trio Southpacific are back. Having split in 2000, they just released their comeback single "Depths."
Beginning with thrumming bass and an echoing wash of guitars before building with fuzz, the all-instrumental "Depths" transports listening right back to Southpacific's '90s wheelhouse. By picking up right where they left off, this recalls Slowdive's similarly satisfying return.
Southpacific's reunion features the same lineup that the band had back in the day, with Joachim Toelke (lead guitar), Phil Stewart-Bowes (bass) and Graeme Fleming (drums/guitar/vocals). They began playing together again in 2019, and their Facebook bio notes that they're planning "a series of new efforts in 2020."
For now, hear "Depths" below.
